Guy,

I tried to help someone who had Windows7 using the KB instructions at the AirBears/AirBears2 site and it didn't work, but I'm not a Windows expert so I don't know if that was an isolated incident or not. I thought I'd mention it just in case others mention the same problem with Windows7 and suggestions are offered for it as well. It's possible that the computer I was setting up had a firewall set up that I wasn't savvy enough to find/look for that was preventing the connection.

We have a win8 machine and have been using it on AirBears with no problems.  We haven’t tried AirBears2 yet, but it’s on our list of things to check.  The directions for Win7 should work with Win8 as the desktop interface is the same minus a start bar.

Sometimes the laptop comes with 3rd party software what will block the redirect to the login page.   I just configured a laptop that had that problem.  I think it was Norton somecrap or something....

I should write something up for Win8....

Hi,

I am unable to connect to Airbears2. All other wifi networks in my life are working fine :)

I started having issues around November last year - Airbears2 was working fine for me up until then. I don't remember changing any settings around that time.

I spent about 2 hours at the help desk in Moffit and the woman there wasn't able to solve it.

It would be great if an Airbears2 expert could take a look and see if there are some settings I need to fix up.

Thanks,
Kenny

Suggestion... roll back the driver for your wifi card. I have seen that fix the problem for a number of Win 8 machines having this problem.

I have the same problem from Haviland Hall.  I was able to connect once, maybe in May or June, but that was it.  I was told that the Airbears 2 signal just doesn't work very well.  It would be great if there was some resolution.  Airbears works fine.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Micronet] Airbears connection issues on Windows 8

Gary Thomas
I have seen multiple instances of problems like this with Windows 8 (and
above).  After some internet research, I have found that there are
occasional inconsistencies with certain combinations of Windows 8 OS,
device platforms, wireless card drivers and how they interact with
enterprise-class wireless networks.  I do not have enough local data to
document all of the combinations, but have seen some of them in action.

Typically, the device will continue to function normally with SOHO
(small office, home office) type access point installations. These are
what you would typically encounter at home or at your local coffee shop
or eatery.  They will also occasionally continue to function on campus,
provided your device does not ever roam between access points and the
access point does not ever change frequencies.

Mr. Vinson was correct earlier in the thread that the known workaround
for this issue is to roll back your wireless card driver to a Windows 7
driver.  I have been told that you may have to set it up in
"compatibility mode" to accomplish this.

Although I am a member of IST, my comments above are not an official IST
statement or course of action, but observations from working with users
and desktop administrators on campus.  Before making any changes to your
device, you should consult with your system administrator.  If you have
specific service requests, please contact the IST service desk
(664-9000, press 1,1,2) and place a trouble report for action.

This post was updated on .
After some research, I think that the problem with AirBers2 is the following issue (links below) regarding Windows 8 and Cisco wireless routers. AirBears is not affected by this. Microsoft says the only solutions are:

1) Using Windows 7 drivers for the wireless card for your computer. I couldn't find such drivers for a MS Surface Pro 2.

2) Having IT update the firmware on their wireless routers. Will this ever happen?

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2749073
https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-27213

Somewhere on the internet (can't find the link now), I found the claim that there is no way to resolve this problem by changing the Group Policy settings for Windows or doing similar things.
