[Micronet] Cardkey Reader that works with Cal ID Cards?

Jack Burris
Howdy,
We're considering the use of a cardkey reader and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to buy one that works with Cal ID Cards.

Thanks!

You might want to talk to UCPD.  They control the card key readers for Wheeler Hall and the ones for our office 112 Hearst Gym.  Tracie Mennenga, [hidden email], would be a good person to start with.

Re: [Micronet] Cardkey Reader that works with Cal ID Cards?

Colin S Brant
Hi Jack,

The Film Department is re-keying classrooms/screening rooms this summer. We decided to go with Trilogy locks as opposed to the system offered by the UCPD based on cost: $2000/per door for the Trilogy vs $7000/per door for the UCPD locks with additional annual fees for their security monitoring services. For us, this work is contracted through the College of Letters & Science Facilities Office.

Note: the above numbers were quoted to us by the Facilities Office and may not reflect exact cost for all situations.

Hope this is helpful,
Colin

Re: [Micronet] Cardkey Reader that works with Cal ID Cards?

Chris Kumai
Jack,

there was also some discussion recently about a possible change in technology for the Cal ID cards with a change to Clipper Cards.  Some questionaires went out about the types of readers in-use on campus as they may not be compatible.  I don’t know the outcome of that.

Tracie would be a good person to check with.

My understanding is that there are only 2 options being the UCPD system or the Trilogy/manual programmed locks.  If you go with the Trilogy system, you’ll need to have someone with a programmer to add people to the locks.  This will likely be a Microsoft OS laptop of some sort.  It’s a bit of hassle for whomever gets the data entry job as each user needs to be uploaded to the lock manually.  The Trilogy system save money at the cost of labor.  Every 3-4 years, you’ll need to replace the battery packs on the Trilogy locks.  (5 AA batteries soldered together if you want to make your own).

Re: [Micronet] Cardkey Reader that works with Cal ID Cards?

Jay Bryon
In reply to this post by Colin S Brant
I might mention that trilogy locks are somewhat a disaster for access control allowing necessary service personnel in when necessary without a lot of friction.  I have personally experienced this and had technical issues stretch out days longer than necessary because of these locks, and the necessity to coordinate access.  The potential salary burn could over time exceed the cost differential.

Centralized control allows for more sophisticated policies and better logging.  So, like many infrastructure related things, sometimes theres nothing more expensive than being cheap.  I'd talk to UCPD and see what the current pricing is for your particular situation.
