[Micronet] Center for Internet Security Orientation - Thursday 10/21

Ryan L. Means
Good morning,

One of the most important IT security practices is creating and
maintaining a secure configuration for systems and applications. Over
the last six months, our Data Security Reviews have indicated that some
campus units struggle with defining and implementing these secure
configurations.

To assist the campus in implementing good security controls, the Office
of the CIO recently purchased a membership for campus faculty and staff
to the Center for Internet Security (CIS), giving us access to their
impressive suite of security benchmarks, their Java audit tool, and many
other resources.

We will be holding an orientation session, hosted by staff from CIS,
next Thursday morning (10/21) in the McCollum room of Tan Hall. There
will also be a conference / WebEx for people who cannot make it to Tan
in-person (connection info below). The orientation session will cover
how to apply security benchmarks, audit machines to see if they have
been installed, and answer any questions you have about the process.

A better understanding of the orientation material will make this
meeting more productive, so I encourage all of you to sign up and review
some of the material so you can bring your questions to the orientation
session.

Allison Henry of SNS has posted specific instructions for signing up to
CIS on the SNS wiki at:

https://wikihub.berkeley.edu/display/sns/Center+for+Internet+Security

Even if you cannot make the meeting, please review this material. We can
discuss it at future Security Operations Workgroup meetings, or if there
is sufficient interest, I'd be happy to host a workshop on how to use
the benchmarks in your unit. If you have any questions or comments,
please let me know.

Thanks,

Ryan
