[Micronet] Filemaker timestamp updates to specific fields, not records

Kendall MOALEM
Any Filemaker gurus out there?

I'm rather new to Filemaker. I've been working to create a number of timestamped fields, that record date change based on a field touch, rather than to update the entire record based on a field touch (which is how the Modification>timestamp works).

I've found this reference which I've followed
but I get stuck at the 'Import' step #8 because it only allows me to link to another database. What I really want to do is link to the other table's data within the same database.

Any suggestions about creating timestamps specific to the field?

Hi Kendall,
Are you looking to create a log (1 or more entries) for when a field has changed?

If so, you can create a field and use the following auto-enter calc:

The field I'm wanting to watch:  Grade

My log field:  GradeLog

Auto-Enter calc:
Let( trigger = Evaluate( ""; Grade );
  List( GradeLog; Case( IsEmpty( Grade ); "{}"; Grade ) & " - " & Get( CurrentTimeStamp ) )
)

This produces test such as:
B - 3/5/2015 2:54:18 PM

Re: [Micronet] [DataNet] Filemaker timestamp updates to specific fields, not records

Kendall MOALEM
Hi Richard, thank you.

I'll need to see on any of 6 fields in my database the date/time/user who made the change. It doesn't need to be a log, but just the most recent touch. A log would work though.

I'm not on Filemaker Server though, but Filemaker Pro Advanced.

Re: [Micronet] [DataNet] Filemaker timestamp updates to specific fields, not records

Hi Kendall,
So it sounds like you want a user ID and a timestamp.  You could use the auto-enter calc I posted and just replace the "grade dash timestamp" with "UserID dash timestamp".  And then since you only want the latest, just don't wrap it in the List() command.

Your mention of 6 fields was a bit unclear:  Did you want a User-Timestamp for each one, or single User-Timestamp for when any of the 6 fields changed?

In my examples, I'm presuming you have user ID field named "UserID".

If the latter, (any of the 6 changed), use:
Let( trigger = Evaluate( ""; [Field1; Field2; Field3; Field4; Field5; Field6] );
  UserID & " - " & Get( CurrentTimeStamp )
)

If the former, (one for each), then create a "log" or "changed" text field for each of the 6 fields and use the same auto-enter calc (but with just the one field).

Re: [Micronet] [DataNet] Filemaker timestamp updates to specific fields, not records

Kendall MOALEM
Thanks to everyone for the help! I was able to get the 6 fields to update separately with a timestamp and user.

In the end, I used the calculate option in field auto-enter tab, based on Richard's suggestion.

Have a great weekend!

Kendall
