Re: [Micronet] MicroNet Meeting - Campus Backup Solutions

Richard DeShong-2
I had a couple of issues with the Blue Jeans video interface (not at all related to Charles Lam):

1) The app wants to grab the user's mic and camera, so unless you tell it otherwise, the user's office environment is broadcast to the other viewers.  This is expected behavior for a meeting where everyone is expected to participate.  But in the case of a presentation, it is, at best, distracting.  This was particularly bad at one point where it sounded like there were two meetings mixed together.  The moderator apparently had a way to mute all participants mic's, but that was 3/4's of the way through the presentation.

2) There were times when I could not hear a question from the audience.  Sometimes the panel member quickly rephrased the question (good), sometimes not (darn).  Not a big deal, as I can usually infer the question from the answer, but it makes it easier to follow if I don't need to do that.

when a presentation style meeting is being broadcast, it seems like both of these issues could be easily mitigated with a bit of education for the presenters/moderator.

BTW, I do echo the thanks for setting up the video broadcast.  I had just gotten back to my office in Lower Sproul at about 10:30 and did not want to run up to Haas.  So the video option was great - I could read and respond to emails while monitoring the presentation.

Re: [Micronet] MicroNet Meeting - Campus Backup Solutions

Michelle Bautista
In reply to this post by Richard DeShong-2
These are common issues I've seen when broadcasting meetings with BlueJeans. Ways to mitigate may include:

1. Placing a bluejeans connected laptop next to the speaker The moderator can still manage the meeting from another computer.
2. Ask the speaker to repeat questions from the audience before answering.
3. don't move the mic as little as possible since the software is constantly recalibrating the sound pic up, while it logically makes sense that moving the mic closer to the audience speaker might improve sound, the movement of the mic itself causes more sound to be dropped off.
4. Using a USB directional mic whenever possible
5. Have someone moderate the online chat to know whether the broadcast is working well and to mute folks (setting the meeting to mute on entry is always a good idea)

Bluejeans has given folks more opportunity to broadcast meetings which is great for all of us, but there's a bit of learning curve to work through.

I'll see if BlueJeans can provide us with additional hints and tricks which should be applicable to any video conferencing tool.

Re: [Micronet] MicroNet Meeting - Campus Backup Solutions

Marlita Kahn
Thanks for the additional guidelines.

Mainly though I am so glad we have the possibility of attending these types of meetings more often because we don’t have to include 45 minutes for traveling to and fro.
