Berkeley Lab's Information Technology Division provides cutting edge
technology in support of the scientific and operational needs of the
4500 staff and thousands of collaborators of the Laboratory.   We help
to enable some of the most advanced fundamental research in the world
by providing the computing tools, networks, and expertise to enable
pioneering science.

If you're the sort of person who thinks "What can we do to make
scientists more productive" is a cool question to drive an IT
organization, then you're our kind of person!

We have an immediate opening for the head of our Infrastructure
Department within IT - a direct report to our CIO.  You'd oversee the
Infrastructure Department, which provides high-speed networking,
telecom, datacenter, and desktop support services (about $13M in
budget and 40 staff) to the scientific and operational staff of the
laboratory.

We are looking for that rare person who combines excellent technical
knowledge and instincts with strong day-to-day management skills of
people, budgets, projects, and programs.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:
Minimum of five years management experience and proven leadership in
the development, operation and maintenance of infrastructure systems,
support, and underlying facilities in large organizations.
Experience supporting the infrastructure needs of research
organizations, or other experiences, which bear on support for high
technology, diverse, demanding environments.
Outstanding communication skills with the well-developed experience
presenting complex issues in both technical and non-technical formats.
Demonstrated ability to develop service agreements and financial
models for services, and establish, meet, and exceed customer
expectations.
Extensive experience providing leadership and supervision to
professional, technical, production and administrative staff to meet
organizational objectives and commitments
 Extensive working and advanced knowledge of some or all of the following:

Networking, network topologies and services, and the needs associated
with scientific data and high performance computing.  Data center
optimization and efficiency (electrical and mechanical systems),
monitoring and management; Analog and digital phone telephony
networks, mobile device management approaches, and consumer/business
VOIP technologies. Security that supports an enterprise
infrastructure, high performance networks and advanced scientific
applications

Berkeley Lab is a member of the national laboratory system supported
by the U.S. Department of Energy through its Office of Science. It is
managed by the University of California (UC) and is charged with
conducting unclassified research across a wide range of scientific
disciplines. Berkeley Lab offers a robust benefits package, with three
weeks paid vacation annually which will increase after years of
service, twelve paid holidays, medical, dental, vision plans and a
generous retirement offering.

NOTES: This is an indefinite (career) appointment.
