[Micronet] UCB calendar on bCal?

Susan Hedgpeth
Does anyone know if there is a way to get the UCB academic calendar events onto my bCal calendar, similar to how it was with CalAgenda?   So we can see, for example, when Welcome Week is, and when classes start etc.    It's not an option in the list of available calendars.

In Google Calendar: Other calendars, add by URL, and this URL:

http://registrar.berkeley.edu/AcadCalDownload.aspx?type=ics&terms=current

I got this by going to the Academic Calendar web site and then
poking around about until I was sure the ICS version was what I
wanted for Google Calendar.

Re: [Micronet] UCB calendar on bCal?

Nancy Lin

In Other Calendars, click on Add by URL:

<a href="webcal://opa.berkeley.edu/academiccalendar/UCBAcadCal.ics" target="_blank">webcal://opa.berkeley.edu/academiccalendar/UCBAcadCal.ics

You will need to rename the calendar so it says Academic Calendar on your screen.  This was better for me as it isn't just current semester but perpetual.
thanks

Susan Hedgpeth
thanks.  it worked!    just FYI, the registrars link worked for me but not the webcal one - maybe i did it wrong.   but i'm happy now.

i wonder why they don't have more events on their calendar -- for example Aug 20 beginning of Welcome Week isn't there (although first day of instruction Aug 23 is).

I also couldn't get the
webcal://opa.berkeley.edu/academiccalendar/UCBAcadCal.ics one to work,
but was able to use
http://registrar.berkeley.edu/AcadCalDownload.aspx?type=ics&terms=current

I'm guessing that is because they still haven't entered that
information.  In the normal web view of that academic calendar at
http://registrar.berkeley.edu/CalendarDisp.aspx?terms=current

it still says:
> Fall Semester 2012
> Welcome Activities
> To be determined

One annoying thing that I'm seeing is that multi-day events don't show
up on the last day in bCal for me.  So when I layer that calendar onto
mine in the bCal web interface "Final Examinations", for instance, only
shows up Mon - Thu, but not Fri.  Also for the two-day holidays like at
Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Christmas, and New Years Eve/New Years only
the first day shows up in bCal.

It would be great if there was an easy-to-use academic/administrative
calendar for campus that showed those things on all of the relevant days.

Yes I also noticed the multiple day problem.   I'm assuming that was just a data entry error that will get fixed.   I hope.

It appears that the iCalendar representation of a multiple day event
on the Academic Calendar looks like this:

BEGIN:VEVENT
UID:[hidden email]
SUMMARY:Final Examinations - Fall Semester 2012
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20121210
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20121214
DTSTAMP:20120816T12393797700Z
END:VEVENT

And from your reports, it appears that bCal / Google Calendar - and
*possibly* some other calendar user agents / clients - will only
display this event on its first date, 2012-12-10.

A suggestion for the Office of the Registrar: they might try
experimenting, in the Academic Calendar's iCalendar representation,
with emitting multiple events (VEVENTs) for multiple day events - one
for each day - each with a DTSTART and DTEND block spanning a single
day, like this:

BEGIN:VEVENT
...
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20121210
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20121211
...
END:VEVENT

BEGIN:VEVENT
...
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20121211
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20121212
...
END:VEVENT

BEGIN:VEVENT
...
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20121212
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20121213
...
END:VEVENT

and so on ...

Or if that doesn't work, some other minor tweaking to the emitted
iCalendar data likely will fix this problem.

Via this note, I'm bcc'ing the relevant folks at the Office of the
Registrar, to request that they look into and resolve this problem.

Re: [Micronet] UCB calendar on bCal?

I'm not sure if it's an error or not, but I've learned a way to hide or collapse the multiple events to reclaim screen space - on desktop any way not sure if this works on mobile devices.

If there are multiple All-Day Events cluttering up the top of the screen a little arrow appears at the top of the band that you can click to hide them.

After events are hidden you can click on the links to see more details as needed.

I also couldn't get the

I'm guessing that is because they still haven't entered that information.  In the normal web view of that academic calendar at http://registrar.berkeley.edu/CalendarDisp.aspx?terms=current

it still says:

> Fall Semester 2012

> Welcome Activities

> To be determined

One annoying thing that I'm seeing is that multi-day events don't show up on the last day in bCal for me.  So when I layer that calendar onto mine in the bCal web interface "Final Examinations", for instance, only shows up Mon - Thu, but not Fri.  Also for the two-day holidays like at Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Christmas, and New Years Eve/New Years only the first day shows up in bCal.

It would be great if there was an easy-to-use academic/administrative calendar for campus that showed those things on all of the relevant days.

Kathleen,  different issue.    you have a good solution to many events on one day.    the problem i and others were referred to is where an event goes for more than one day - problem is that it only shows up on the first day.    for example, look at thanksgiving vacation - it only shows up on thursday when it should be on friday also.

Re: [Micronet] UCB calendar on bCal?

Kathleen Valerio

I don’t Thanksgiving on my calendar at all – but it probably has more to do with how the event was entered than anything else.

If a Day Event runs longer that one day it bridges the days and displays and extended arrow at the end.

That isn't quite it.  In the example you show above where the iCalendar
representation has the date without any times shows as this in Google /
bCal:

Mon, December 10, 2012, 00:00 – Fri, December 14, 2012, 00:00

And it does show as a single event across the first four days (Mon,
10-Dec through Thu, 13-Dec) but does not show on the final day (Fri,
14-Dec).  For two-day events that is indistinguishable from just showing
the first day, but for the longer events you can see the difference.
(And, I don't blame Google for thinking that something that ends a 00:00
on a day doesn't actually bleed into that day...)

Thanks, Rune; that sounds right.

At least for Google Calendar, the issue isn't (contrary to my earlier
speculation) whether it can handle a 'full day' event that spans
multiple days - clearly it can - but rather this issue *might* be just
about the interpretation of the value of the ending date.

That is, for an event that occurs on five days, such as the 2012 Final
Examinations week which begins on Monday, December 10 and ends on
Friday, December 14:

BEGIN:VEVENT
...
SUMMARY:Final Examinations - Fall Semester 2012
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20121210
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20121214
...
END:VEVENT

the current end value of 20121214 might be treated by Google Calendar
as though it is ending at the beginning of the day (effectively 12:00
am) on Friday, December 14, rather than at the end of that day (12:00
pm) on Friday, December 14.

What's interesting is that it's Google Calendar's interpretation of
that date range that's at issue; it preserves and exports that event
with the same range that it was imported, from the Academic Calendar:

BEGIN:VEVENT
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20121210
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20121214
DTSTAMP:20120817T025037Z
UID:[hidden email]
CREATED:20120904T202020Z
DESCRIPTION:
LAST-MODIFIED:20120810T115222Z
LOCATION:
SEQUENCE:0
STATUS:CONFIRMED
SUMMARY:Final Examinations - Fall Semester 2012
TRANSP:OPAQUE
END:VEVENT

So either Google Calendar is in spec, or out of spec, as a calendar
user agent in dropping the last full day when displaying this event.
Worth a look by the bCal support folks ... I'll send this on to them,
if someone from that team doesn't respond before I get the chance to
do so.

(And thanks again, Rune!)

Re: [Micronet] UCB calendar on bCal?

Aron Roberts
Apple's iCal and Mozilla Sunbird also display the multi-day 2012 Final
Examinations event from the Academic Calendar in the same way that
bCal / Google Calendar - the event stretches from December 10 through
December 13, but omits the final day, December 14.

So it's likely that Google Calendar is up to calendar user agent spec
(most likely), or at least de facto practice for such user agents, and
that the Registrar's Academic Calendar needs to be tweaked, to set
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20121215 (not 20121214), and similarly adjust ending
dates for all other multi-day, all-day events.  After doing so, those
dates appear correctly in iCal and Sunbird.

Re: [Micronet] UCB calendar on bCal?

Michael Chung
Hi All,

I took a brief look at the iCal specification but did not find anything definitive this particular issue. But given that Sunbird, Outlook (tested myself) and Apple iCal  exhibit the same behavior of described below, it seems that that the Registrar's calendar needs the a correction here to be consistent with specification.

On a related note, I recently learned that Google does not recognize floating date-time values for DTSTART and DTEND fields in iCalendar files. These values are automatically converted into GMT. I experienced this issue recently when an appointment I received was defined in floating-time. The appointment was correctly recognized by Outlook and iOS Calendar, but Google scheduled the event in GMT (-7) so that  9 AM appointment appeared in the calendar at 2AM.

See: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/calendar/oHZsiNxzjuQ%5B1-25%5D

While I'd generally recommend that meeting organizers include time zone information in iCal files, it's too bad that Google doesn't adhere to this part of the iCal specification.

Thanks,

Michael Chung

Thanks
Carol
