The post on http://systemstatus.berkeley.edu implies that it came back up after about a minute.  Not so?

http://www.berkeley.edu seems to work fine for me...

John McChesney-Young
In reply to this post by Beth Muramoto
Eighteen minutes ago, UCB-NET-ANNOUNCE sent out this:

UNSCHED OUTAGE Campuswide March 7, 2013 08:30 - TBD

Equipment: Data Center Firewall
Location: Campuswide
Date: March 7, 2013 Start: 08:30 End: TBD

Description:
This morning at around 08:30-9:00 AM we experienced a software issue
on the redundant firewall
cluster that provides security to multiple networks in the data
center.  This caused widespread
access issues for many campus applications and services.

We are currently working with the vendor to determine the cause of the
problem.  We believe that
connectivity is fully restored at this time, but continue to consider
this to be an ongoing outage because
the cause of the event is unclear.

***

So, they think it's fixed but they're playing it safe.

As Ian points out, the problem should have been relatively brief,
though because it affected the connectivity for many systems in the
data center, there may be lingering impacts.

Is one of the impacts the inability to logon onto bMail through a
browser? This has been an intermittent problem all morning.

I figured out a shortcut that seems to work for me -- login to bCal first, then hit the "Mail" tab on the top of the bCal screen.  It should take you into bMail.

Hope that helps.

I did that, too. But, it doesn't always work. Still a bit wonky. Should not have to do all these "shortcuts".... a bit annoying especially when you get all your users calling at the same time complaining.....

Re: [Micronet] berkeley campus domain outage

Alex Warren

I have gotten that as well.  It’s because the shibboleth server is behind the firewall and can’t authenticate people to Google services.  I literally had someone log in 3 times in the span of 5 minutes and got on once, so it’s hit or miss.

Hi roy,

We probably could have gotten the UCB Net Announce out sooner so you
had an answer for your users, sorry about that.  It wasn't clear right
away where the problem was.

If there are still problems with bmail access you may want to contact
the bconnect folks to talk about it so that they can take a look.  We
believe that the network is running fine right now.  More information
is always useful if users are seeing something different.

Regards

iso

Thanks, Alex for the explanation. So, we will all have to wait until the problem at the data center is completely resolved. Keep us updated.

Thanks,
